Review: A Mole Like No Other by Julia B. Grantham, Illustrated by Carol Wellart.

‘A Mole Like No Other’ is a delightful book about a toy mole, who is looking for love, friendship and his place in the world.

The story of Moley and his friends – toys and real animals – is set in a cosy English country house with a traditional garden. But behind all this tranquillity, challenges and even dangers, await the characters.

The story is told beautifully and with great humour. It is written as a ‘read-aloud’ book for parents and carers. It is a fun story with lovely (and wise) life lessons and advice interwoven throughout. Children of all ages will take something different from it, enjoying the adventures and the characters, while adults will also be delighted with its rich language, subtle literary references, and tongue-in-cheek humour.

The book is illustrated with original pencil drawings in the best British tradition of artwork for children’s books.

A Mole Like No Other has a sweet, soft, comforting quality to the writing making it an ideal bedtime story to read to younger children.

It is a calm, soothing, gentle story, looking at Moley’s thoughts, behaviours, and reactions to those around him and events that occur. It teaches you not to jump to conclusions, or judge others, to let your friends help you, and to help them if you can.

A lovely adventure, based on life at home and in the garden with great underlying themes around emotions and friendships.

I feel that this would make a brilliant audiobook or even children’s film, I could just imagine watching it at Christmas with the family! A lovely classical style that can capture the hearts of all ages.

Highly recommended, especially for those aged 5-10 years old.

  1. A Mole Like No Other is one of the inspiring children’s s books beautifully written in graphic narrative tuned to child psychology. It is a nice story comprised with humor, fun, and moral lessons for young children as to how they would interact with the world and surrounding . The characters and plot are truly apt. I recommend this book worthy for the children and schools should think of recommending in the educational calendar. My best wishes for the author.
